This Michael Jackson Synchronized Swimming Routine Is SO Good, It Almost Got a Perfect Score

This Michael Jackson Synchronized Swimming Routine Is SO Good, It Almost Got a Perfect Score

At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Russian athletes Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina paid tribute to the King of Pop in their synchronized swimming routine, and it was so iconic, we're bringing it back for good measure. The duet performed to Michael Jackson's hit "They Don't Care About Us" for their technical routine at the games in London, and they left judges in awe over their electric moves. Natalia and Svetlana were perfectly in sync, scoring a 98.200 on their choreographed performance and eventually taking home the gold medal.

The second the women dive into the water and the music starts, their energy levels are on a permanent high. Between their fierce kicks and rapid underwater twirls, it's safe to assume they drew some inspiration from Michael's own dance moves before coming up with this routine. We're fully aware that it's been a few years since this competition was making headlines, but we're taking it as motivation to kick our in-pool workouts up a notch this Summer. Check out the video above, and prepare to be amazed.

The Unexpected Health Risk of Having Unprotected Anal Sex

POPSUGAR Fitness
The Unexpected Health Risk of Having Unprotected Anal Sex

Anal sex can be pleasurable for everyone involved, but there are health risks to consider - as with any form of unprotected sex. One of the biggest concerns that comes with backdoor play is, unexpectedly, HPV. The human papillomavirus is most well-known for causing cervical cancer and can be prevented through pap smear screenings and the HPV vaccine. However, an HPV infection can make someone more prone to developing anal cancer.

"Unfortunately, HPV can also be transmitted to the anus through anal intercourse and cause cancer there," San Diego-based gynecologist Christine Sterling told POPSUGAR. Dr. Sterling added that the risk is even higher because routine screenings are not given for anal cancers.

According to the American Cancer Society, "Women with a history of cervical cancer (or pre-cancer) have an increased risk of anal cancer." It's not the anal warts themselves that cause cancer; there are over 150 subtypes of HPV, and one that is most likely to cause anal cancer is HPV-16.

Although HPV can be passed on during sexual activity (including oral sex), the virus can also be spread by skin-to-skin contact with an infected area. It's also possible for an HPV infection to spread from the genitals to the anus. To lower your chances of becoming infected with HPV, the CDC recommends getting vaccinated, getting routine screenings for cervical cancer, using latex condoms, and being in a "mutually monogamous relationship" (but we acknowledge that responsible sex goes beyond your relationship status).

If you're engaging in anal sex, be sure to use plenty of lube (as the anus doesn't self-lubricate), clean any involved parts before engaging in other sexual activity (such as oral or vaginal sex), and use contraception and/or protection.

4 Signs Your Chronic Stress Is Actually a Symptom of Adrenal Fatigue

POPSUGAR Fitness
4 Signs Your Chronic Stress Is Actually a Symptom of Adrenal Fatigue

There's a good chance you've never heard the words "adrenal fatigue" until just now, but it's probably not the first time you've dealt with serious stress. Carolyn Mein and Merethe Najjar at YourTango explain how chronic stress may actually be due to our body's overactive flight-or-fight response.

Tired of feeling burned out?

Adrenal fatigue symptoms can look a lot like the signs of chronic stress. So how can you tell the difference, and what is adrenal fatigue exactly?

Adrenal fatigue is a stress-related condition where your adrenal glands - the ones that control your "fight or flight" response - never shut off, and as a result, your body feels drained from the chronic stress it's experiencing.

According to Dr. Carolyn Mein, adrenal fatigue is very common. Our brains, which developed over millennia of fighting battles and working hard to survive in the wilderness, are completely lost when it comes to dealing with the stressors of our modern-day lives, so our "fight or flight" response is triggered constantly.

What's amazing is that this primal instinct still works as well today as it did thousands of years ago. But the problem is your animalistic brain doesn't understand the difference between getting chased down by tigers and having to finish that big project for your business meeting with the boss on Friday.

So whether you've just choked on the microphone in a room full of people or have someone threatening you, your brain gives your adrenal glands the exact same order: Save me! The resulting panic that can flood your system over a minor issue in your personal life feels exactly the same to your brain as the impending doom of an attack.

This back-and-forth of stress hormones can send your adrenal glands into high gear, constantly readying you for the next big life or death situation - and resulting in chronic stress.

But over time, this response can essentially burn itself out and leave you in the "on" position, since your brain doesn't know the difference between when it should be in high-adrenaline fear mode or the fact that you got embarrassed in a crowd of people.

And since adrenal glands are some of the strongest in the body, says Dr. Mein, they begin draining energy from other parts of your body when they're overworked. This is what leaves you feeling constantly stressed and exhausted.

Here are four signs that your chronic stress and exhaustion might actually be symptoms of adrenal fatigue:

1. You can't fall asleep, even though you're exhausted.

Even though you're tired literally all. the. time, you find it difficult to fall asleep (and stay asleep!). Whether it's racing thoughts or your body feels wired with adrenaline, you simply can't unwind enough to go to bed and get the rest your body desperately needs.

2. Your immune system is down.

Does it seem like you're always battling a cold or your lymph nodes are swollen? All of this emotional and mental fatigue, plus a lack of sleep, can wreak havoc on your immune system, making it easier for you to get sick.

3. You crave salty foods.

Your adrenal glands produce a steroid called aldosterone, and aldosterone's job is to help regulate your body's sodium levels. So if you crave salty foods often, it could be a sign your sodium is low as a result of adrenal fatigue.

4. You shut down when you're overwhelmed.

If your stress and exhaustion levels are through the roof constantly, at some point, your mind and body may have had enough. As a result, you might simply shut down when you have to deal with any stress at all and become detached or non-reactive.

Stress is a constant in life, but if your chronic stress is causing symptoms of adrenal fatigue, it's time to take action.

How your body reacts to and deals with adrenal fatigue depends on your personal body "type," says Dr. Mein, and so what works for one person's body type may not specifically work for the others (there are 25 body types total).

Dr. Carolyn L. Mein is a chiropractic physician with an active practice in Rancho Santa Fe, CA. She works with people to develop healthy eating based on their body types as well as to help them overcome obstacles that are keeping them from attaining lasting love and happiness. You can contact her here for further information.

If you're trying to lose weight, then you're probably hyperaware of the calories of your favorite foods. Cheese, while delicious and savory and good melted on top of just about anything, is a high-fat, high-calorie food that you may want to eat in moderation. Instead of giving up cheese altogether, many people opt for the "lighter" option in the form of nonfat cheese, especially the shredded varieties.

But while nonfat cheese is a lower-calorie option, it's totally not worth it according to Joy Bauer, MS, RDN, CDN, author of Joy's Simple Food Remedies.

"[Nonfat cheeses] taste a bit plastic and don't melt well, so they leave you feeling unsatisfied," Joy told POPSUGAR. "These aren't worth it, in my opinion." If you're unsatisfied, you're more likely to reach for more of your favorite comfort foods to fill that void which could derail your weight-loss progress.

Instead, she recommends two percent reduced-fat shredded cheeses of all flavors: part-skim mozzarella, Mexican blend, or cheddar.

"They melt beautifully, just like regular, and have the same indulgent flavor for a bit less saturated fat and fewer calories," Joy said. "And thanks to the 'shred factor,' you can sprinkle a few handfuls over an omelet, salad, burger, and more! Most varieties typically contain just 80 calories per quarter cup serving while offering up seven grams of protein."

The good news is you can totally indulge in cheese and still lose weight. If shredded cheese isn't your thing, check out our list of the other best cheeses to eat and still lose weight, including brie, feta, goat cheese, and more.

Allison Made This 1 Tweak to Her Diet and It Completely Transformed Her Butt

Allison Made This 1 Tweak to Her Diet and It Completely Transformed Her Butt

Allison Murphy always had a hard time gaining weight and maintaining it, regardless of what she ate. "As I got older, I began to despise how long and lanky I was," Allison told POPSUGAR. She realized that working out (something she already loved to do) would give her body more of a shape by adding muscle mass - and that's exactly what she did. Continue reading to learn exactly how Allison transformed her butt.

How Her Diet Changed

Instead of counting calories and obsessing over her diet, Allison said she focused on eating clean and listening to her body's hunger cues. "My meals often consist of all vegetables (there's not one I don't like), rice or quinoa, beans, lentils, and chicken or fish," Allison said. In order to maintain her weight and physique, Allison had to increase the amount of food she was eating, specifically her protein intake, drinking plant-based protein shakes with peanut butter.

The Workout She Did For a Bigger Butt

Allison said that she was very active growing up, participating in activities like dance, horseback riding, and running. "I never really knew much about working out as far as weight training was concerned," Allison explained. Once she started working with her personal trainer, Ryan Read, her knowledge about weightlifting expanded. "When I started, I could only lift or squat the bar by itself, but you've got to start somewhere!" Although her strength was minimal, she began to lift weights three to fives times a week, eventually impressing herself with the progress she had made.

The Workout She Stopped Doing

Allison cut back on the amount of cardio she was doing because it caused her to lose too much weight and muscle mass. Instead, she began to do 15 to 20 minutes of cardio on the StairMaster or walks around her neighborhood a few times a week. She credits Ryan with showing her "the dos and don'ts, as well as certain routines to alter my body in the ways I wanted." As far as her results, Allison said, "The results are addicting; lifting heavier and feeling stronger is one of the most rewarding feelings around."

The Worst Cheeses You Can Eat If You're Trying to Lose Weight, According to Dietitians

POPSUGAR Fitness
The Worst Cheeses You Can Eat If You're Trying to Lose Weight, According to Dietitians

Let's just get one thing clear: there's no such thing as "good" or "bad" foods. Sure, there are some foods that are more nutritious for your body than others, but assigning moral value to foods is a recipe (pun intended!) for disordered eating and a poor relationship with food.

That being said, there are some foods that can help you reach your goals faster. For example, there are some cheeses that can help you reach weight-loss goals because they are low-calorie, satiating, full of vitamins, or packed with protein. On the flip side, there are some cheeses that will add some extra calories and grams of saturated fat to your daily diet, which could stall your progress or even cause you to pack on the pounds.

Keep in mind, this is mostly for people who are doing good old-fashioned calorie or macro counting, not keto, which encourages the consumption of full-fat dairy. That being said, here are the cheeses dietitians recommend avoiding if you're trying to lose weight.

After Trying All the Pills and Creams, This 1 Thing Finally Cleared My Acne in 2 Weeks

I'll never forget when I was babysitting one day after college and the tiny 1-year-old pointed to a monstrosity of a zit on my chin. I tried to ignore her and distract her with a toy, but she kept pointing. The mother looked at me sympathetically and just said, "Yep, she has a boo-boo."

At that point, it had been well over 10 years since I had experienced bad breakouts. I didn't have terrible acne that covered my face, but my issue was that I always had a few enormous, Rudolf-the-red-nosed-reindeer types of pimples that were deep, painful, and red. There was never a moment when I was zit-free; when one was going away, another few were popping up.

I was so self-conscious because it continued into my 30s, and no over-the-counter remedies or oral contraceptives helped one bit. I saw a dermatologist, determined to clear my skin before my wedding day in August 2008, but the harsh topical medications only made my skin red and irritated, and my skin didn't clear up at all. Into my mid to late 30s, my two pregnancies did help a little (thank you, hormones!), but after each baby was born, the acne would return. I was now 40 years old and still breaking out.

How I Cured My Acne

It wasn't until January 2017, when I gave up sugar for a month for my New Year's resolution, that I experienced soft, clear skin for the first time. I actually gave up sugar not for my skin (I didn't know it would help), but as a personal experiment to heal the belly bloat I had been experiencing for six months that my doctor couldn't figure out.

I not only felt better after the second week, feeling zero bloat and digestive issues, but the acne I've had on my chin since I was 12 years old disappeared. I kept looking in the mirror, waiting for a pimple to pop up, but my skin stayed clear for the rest of the month.

Was This Really the Answer?

After the month was up, I celebrated by splurging on homemade chocolate chip cookies. I mean, living without cake, brownies, ice cream, and chocolate for 30 days was tough. After a week of eating a little white sugar every day, my stomach waged war, and sure enough, so did my face.

I was so happy . . . and also pissed. I couldn't believe I found the one thing to heal my skin and prevent embarrassing breakouts and that it was so simple, but the cure really sucked! No sugar? No ordering dessert after dinner? No more baking? No more chocolate?!

How I Live With the Cure

Because I'm human - and my last name is Sugar - living 100 percent without treats really wasn't an option. I found ways to get my sweet fix without it affecting my face (or my stomach). I discovered how to bake with bananas and dates, making desserts that are just as sweet as using white sugar, and I can still get my chocolate fix by using cocoa powder in recipes. Ice cream is easy - I just make nice cream using frozen fruit.

Honestly, sugary treats just don't feel worth it anymore when they affect me so negatively. Even though I'm tempted when I see people enjoying cake at parties or eating pastries at coffee shops, I get over it real quick because I'm grateful that I've found the one food I can avoid that makes me look and feel healthy. That's not to say I never eat sugar ever. I do enjoy a couple bites every so often (and love every second), but I know how bad I'll feel if I eat a ton, and that prevents me from going overboard.

I wish I knew about this in junior high, because it would have saved me decades of feeling badly about my skin. If you suffer from acne and medications and other treatments haven't worked, sugar may be your issue, too. Wouldn't it be amazing if curing your acne was this simple? You'll never know unless you try. What have you got to lose?

POPSUGAR Fitness
FDA Warns Against Vaginal 'Rejuvenation' Devices Citing Scary Side Effects

Vaginal rejuvenation procedures are a popular trend among medspas and other wellness facilities, not to mention as a B-plot storyline in several reality TV episodes. And while the treatment promises to help with unpleasant issues such as vaginal dryness and increase pleasure during sex, these lofty claims aren't just false - they can be harmful to your health. The FDA has warned that the energy-based devices that these procedures often use can have serious and scary side effects.

"We are aware that certain device manufacturers may be marketing their energy-based medical device for vaginal 'rejuvenation' and/or cosmetic vaginal procedures," the FDA wrote in a release on its website. "The safety and effectiveness of energy-based medical devices to perform these procedures has not been established."

The devices, which use laser or radiofrequency waves, have been approved by the FDA for gynecologists to use to treat abnormal and pre-cancerous vaginal and cervical tissue and genital warts. They have not, however, been approved for other purported benefits such as vaginal dryness, itching, laxity, pain during sex, pain during urination, or decreased sexual sensation.

"The treatment of these symptoms or conditions by applying energy-based therapies to the vagina may lead to serious adverse events, including vaginal burns, scarring, pain during sexual intercourse, and recurring/chronic pain," the FDA warned.

The FDA is encouraging anyone who has experienced adverse effects from these procedures to file a report through MedWatch, the FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event reporting program. If you are experiencing vaginal issues, the FDA instead encourages you to speak with your doctor instead of receiving a vaginal rejuvenation treatment.

Although the promises of vaginal rejuvenation seem enticing, the procedure is potentially dangerous and totally not worth it - no matter how many Real Housewives have gotten it done on camera. Assessing your vaginal health is something best done by you and your gynecologist.

This Trainer's Comment Will Completely Change Your Relationship With Food

With so many beautiful women gracing the covers of magazines and our Instagram feeds, there's constant pressure to change our bodies to look more like theirs. And it's easy to get consumed with weight-loss methods like calorie counting, especially as you begin to see desired results, but it's also important to take a step back and evaluate your relationship with food. During the Chicago stop of G. Sport Sessions, a fitness experience by Westin Hotels and Goop, Westin's Global Run Concierge Chris Heuisler made a comment to POPSUGAR that may forever alter the way you view food from a weight-loss perspective.

"I get concerned when I hear people look at food as a number," Chris told us. "I think food and eating and nourishing your body is a joyful experience. I want to enjoy my food; I want to enjoy the fact that I can eat food given how many people in this world cannot eat food. And if I diminish the joy of food by attaching a number of calories to it, how much can I really enjoy it?"

Chris acknowledged that he's sensitive to those who struggle with disordered eating but encourages others to "have a relationship with food that you're proud of." For example, if you're going to opt for a smoothie, feel good about it. Same as how you shouldn't punish yourself over a doughnut or two. We're all for leading a healthy lifestyle, but remember that food should be enjoyed and appreciated, not demonized.

"As long are your relationship with food is benign, then you're good to go," Chris said. "When it switches, you're in a pretty unhealthy territory. It's really not about a number."

So any time you're feeling guilty about a cheat meal, remind yourself that you're allowed to (and should!) enjoy what you love. Indulging every now and then won't do any harm, and what's most important is that you feel your best!
