10 million women to receive vital health education through mobiles by IMImobile, BBC Media Action and The Gates Foundation
London, Thursday, 21st January, 2016 - IMImobile, which helps companies to engage with their customers via mobile technologies, has teamed up with BBC Media Action, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to roll out free mobile health education services for the Government of India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to nearly 10 million families and one million community health workers across India.
Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, JP Nadda, recently launched a program to roll out two mobile health services developed by BBC Media Action and powered by IMImobile’s technology nationwide. These m-health services use the IMIconnect communications technology platform to make pre-recorded audio health messages available to millions of women. The services will educate families about simple steps that new and expectant mothers can take to improve their health, and the health of their children:
Mobile Academy service is a voice based mobile training course on reproductive, maternal, new-born and child health for Community Health workers, designed to expand their knowledge of life-saving preventative healthcare and enhance their capacity to engage effectively with families. Front-line workers can access the course from any phone and complete it at their convenience.Kilkari service is an IVR subscription service that delivers time-sensitive audio information about maternal and child health to the mobile phones of husbands, their pregnant wives, and young children for up to 72 weeks. The information is linked to the woman’s stage of pregnancy and/or child’s age.The services are currently being launched in Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, and are already targeting 850,000 families every week.
Jay Patel, CEO, IMImobile, commented:
“We are delighted to support the launch of these vital services to improve front line health communication in areas where mobile communication is the only viable option for providing much needed health advice. This key initiative highlights how the use of mobile engagement technologies can make a huge difference to people’s lives.
“There are over one billion mobile users in India and we hope to play a crucial role in assisting organizations that need scalable multi-channel technologies in order to realise the vision of a Digital India.”
Rahul Mullick, Head of ICT & Supply Chain at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, said:
“The national launch of mHealth services is a great step towards leveraging India’s increasing mobile penetration to make healthcare services accessible to everyone across India. We at the foundation believe technology can offer compelling solutions in solving public health challenges and are committed to supporting the government in its ambitious agenda of prioritising equitable access to public health services.”
Sara Chamberlain, Digital Director, BBC Media Action India, added:
“The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s commitment to using mobile phone technology to provide free reproductive, maternal, neo-natal and child health education to every new and expecting mother in India is a ground breaking step towards realizing the vision of Digital India. We are proud to be a part of this transformational initiative.”

A new online platform for people living with atrial fibrillation
Gerrards Cross (United Kingdom) | Madrid (Spain), 18th February 2016 – People Who (www.peoplewho.co.uk), the European online platform for e-patients, is kicking off 2016 with the launch of its latest illness: atrial fibrillation. In collaboration with Daiichi Sankyo, the digital platform is launching a new space to spread awareness of the illness in the UK and to offer online services to help improve the lives of people affected by atrial fibrillation in any way, whether diagnosed themselves, caring for someone with the illness or just interested in finding out more.
Atrial fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation is a common heart rhythm disorder which affects 33.5 million people worldwide: nearly 0.5% of the world’s population[1]. What’s more, here in the UK it affects at least 1 million people, with many more thought to be living with the illness undiagnosed. And while many live with the illness without even realising it, it can lead to serious complications like stroke. But with the right treatment, it’s possible to live well with atrial fibrillation. Raising awareness of the illness is essential to ensure that patients get diagnosed as early as possible, helping them to live better with the illness and avoid its complications.
Atrial fibrillation affects different people in different ways. Some will notice symptoms like palpitations or shortness of breath, whilst in other cases it goes without symptoms. But given that it can lead to serious complications like stroke, it’s essential to be on the lookout. The surest way to identify it as soon as possible it to regularly check your heartbeat for any irregularities. If it’s consistently below 60 or above 100 beats per minute, or beats with an irregular rhythm, you should go to your doctor. A diagnosis of atrial fibrillation can be confirmed by an electrocardiogram (ECG), a test which measures the heart’s beat using electrodes.
The treatment for atrial fibrillation can include rhythm or rate control, to get the heartbeat under control, ablation to stop the abnormal electrical impulses in the heart which cause the illness, and anticoagulants to prevent the blood from clotting, reducing the risk of stroke. Your doctor will examine your particular case and circumstances to decide on the best course of treatment.
People Who’s atrial fibrillation platform has been launched to give people affected by the illness in any way – whether patients or carers – a space to meet others and find trustworthy information about the illness. At www.peoplewho.co.uk/atrialfibrillation they can find:
A Community, where users can meet others in the same situation as them, join groups of users with interests in common and follow the activities of organisations working with patients of atrial fibrillation. They can also ask questions to the community to get answers from other users and from a qualified doctor.
A Magazine with articles about treatments, prevention and new research surrounding atrial fibrillation, all supervised by doctors to ensure it’s accurate and trustworthy. Users can also submit their own stories of atrial fibrillation for publication in the magazine to share what they’ve learned, and read the stories of other users.
And a Control section where patients can keep a record of the food they eat, medication they take and any readings or test results, using this information to keep track of the illness’s progress. They can also produce reports which they can take to their doctor to give them a better idea of the patient’s life outside the surgery and to personalise their treatment.
To launch the platform, People Who have created a short informative video about how the heart works, and how atrial fibrillation is caused. To watch this video and find further information on atrial fibrillation, visit: www.peoplewho.co.uk/atrialfibrillation

New publication shows surprisingly positive results with oncolytic virus Rigvir
The surprisingly positive treatment outcomes using Rigvir virotherapy for late stages cancer patients were recently published. The patients of melanoma stage IV M1c, small cell lung cancer stage IIIA and histiocytic sarcoma stage IV started virotherapy with Rigvir within a few months after being diagnosed and are continuing this treatment. Patients have significantly exceeded the life expectancy, which is usual for such diagnoses. After beginning the therapy their condition stabilized and the quality of life significantly improved.
Despite research and progress in melanoma therapy, mortality rates are high and melanoma is one of the common cancers in the Western world. Small lung cancer is one of the most aggressive lung cancer subtypes. Even though its response to chemotherapy and radiation is high, recurrence is common and long term survival does not exceed 5%. Histiocytic sarcoma is a rare kind of cancer and only a limited number of histiocytic sarcoma cases have been described. Using current standard treatments, the survival of patients with present diagnoses is low.
In contrast, the cancer patients described were diagnosed 3.5, 7 and 6.6 years ago and their conditions have improved and have been stable for over 1.5, 6.5 and 4 years, respectively. They have been long-term treated with Rigvir oncolytic virotherapy starting from 1 to 2 months after diagnosis. These observations suggest that oncolytic virotherapy using Rigvir can successfully be used in long-term treatment of patients with melanoma stage IV M1c, small cell lung cancer stage IIIA, and histiocytic sarcoma stage IV.
Oncolytic virotherapy with Rigvir is an active immunotherapy in cancer treatment using a virus that finds and destroys malignant cells in the human body. The world’s first approved cancer virotherapy medicine is Rigvir. It has been registered for melanoma treatment in Latvia since 2004 where approximately 75% of melanoma patients are treated with this medicine. Also it is included in national clinical guidelines for skin melanoma treatment. However in clinical practice it has also been used for treatment of several other cancers, for example, gastric and rectal cancers, where 5-year survival was improved. Rigvir has been shown to significantly reduce the mortality in melanoma stage IB-IIC patients. A retrospective study published by Melanoma Research suggests that a significant number of melanoma patients would benefit from prolonging the survival with oncolytic virotherapy treatment, moreover this can be achieved without serious side effects. Recently European Commission awarded Rigvir with a grant for cancer virotherapy medicine commercialization in the EU markets within a framework of Horizon 2020 programme “Dedicated support to the biotechnology SMEs closing the gap from lab to market”.

Micrima raises £2.6million for ground-breaking breast imaging technology
1 September 2016: Micrima, the Bristol-based breast imaging company and developer of a ground-breaking and CE Mark approved radiowave breast imaging system, has successfully closed on a new financing round of £2.6m. The new funding will support accelerated development of its patented MARIA technology, which aims to enable breast screening to become safer, more comfortable and more accessible to a larger proportion of the global female population. The company intends to start the commercialisation of its first system towards the end of this year.
“Breast cancer is the most common cause of death in women between the ages of 35 and 55 in Europe and the leading cause of death for women in many countries. The problem is that many tumours are not discovered early enough, largely due to the difficulty in discriminating between cancers and dense tissue using current imaging technology,” said Roy Johnson, Micrima’s Executive Chairman. “Using harmless radiowaves, the MARIA imaging system is capable of detecting tumours in dense tissue and allows routine and repeated scanning without any of the safety or comfort concerns associated with x-ray mammography. The process takes less than five minutes and avoids painful breast compression.”
Almost half of the new funds has come from pre-existing institutional and individual investors with the majority of the balance from new high net worth individuals; 50% of the latter through the Venture Founders platform. Re-investing shareholders include Technology Venture Partners LLP, based at the Innovation Centre at Bristol & Bath Science Park, Swarraton Partners, a UK venture capital firm investing in European early stage technology companies and the British Business Bank supported Angel CoFund. The company welcomes the Parkwalk managed University of Bristol Enterprise Fund as a new investor.
The funding comes at an exciting period of significant progress for Micrima with the first clinical data from MARIA presented at the European Congress of Radiology in Vienna earlier this year to a very positive reception. The latest results from current multi-site clinical trials were presented at Symposium Mammographicum in Liverpool in July where, from over 90 papers accepted, Micrima’s was one of only four to receive an award from the organising committee. A paper reporting the pre-CE Mark clinical trial has also been accepted for publication by the prestigious Journal of Medical Imaging.
Regarding the European Congress of Radiology presentation, Dr Mike Shere of the Bristol Breast Care Centre commented, “I was delighted to be able to present the latest sensitivity figures in Vienna. The presentation on MARIA was very well received, with the chair of the breast imaging session singling the work out and commenting on how he expected to see more about this very promising new modality over the coming years."
The Company also continues to make excellent progress on the next version of the MARIA system, due to be released early next year, which will offer significantly enhanced functionality, including the ability to automatically distinguish between different types of lesion, providing a significant advantage over current methods for its future screening applications.
Tim Mills, Investment Director at the Angel CoFund commented: "We originally invested in Micrima because we knew we'd found an extremely capable team working with some very interesting technology in a sector with considerable opportunity for innovation. The team has really delivered on our expectation in the last couple of years and we're very happy to be supporting them again through this next phase of development."
The MARIA radiowave breast imaging technology was initially pioneered at the University of Bristol in the UK. It received European regulatory approval in 2015 and is currently deployed in clinical trials based at several breast cancer imaging centres throughout the UK. Isosec Ltd. Take On The 90,000 Challenge For Bliss Baby Charity
Developers of the MIA Maternity app are taking a step for every baby in need of specialist care in the UK.
The Isosec Charity of the Year 2016 is Bliss. Bliss exists to ensure that every baby born premature or sick in the UK has the best chance of survival and quality of life.
Every year, 90,000 babies are admitted to a hospital for specialist care – many of these babies will need lifesaving intensive care. Bliss is there for these little ones by empowering their families and working with health professionals to ensure they have the best care possible.
Isosec have developed the MIA Maternity app for Midwives in the NHS. MIA Maternity transforms paper processes into a streamlined mobile app to save clinician’s time and money to be spent on better patient care. As a result of working with Maternity departments across the country Isosec have seen first hand the difference Bliss makes to families. Special features have been built into the MIA Maternity app workflow for babies born under 37 weeks; ensuring families get the support available to them.
